Desiree Woodland and her husband, Gary live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They have two children, Michelle and Ryan. Ryan took his life at age 23 after being diagnosed with a mental illness. Desiree wrote a book called I Still Believe, about her journey through grief, and trying to understand mental illness and suicide. She retired after 19 years of teaching to promote a curriculum for schools called Breaking the Silence NM which teaches mental illness and suicide awareness to middle and high school students. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from UNM and a masters level certificate in Grief and Loss from Southwestern College. She serves on the board of Survivors of Suicide ABQ and co-facilitates the suicide survivor group, as well as a Mother’s SOS Group at the Grief Resource Center.
