Using SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) for Youth Suicidality During a Pandemic

Session Description

My colleagues and I have successfully implemented SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) in medical sites, IHS, pueblos, urgent care, emergency departments, trauma departments, and school-based health centers to identify, assess, refer, and briefly treat youth at risk for substance abuse, depression, trauma, anxiety, and suicide. This workshop will focus on how the key elements of SBIRT – universal screening, motivational interviewing, well-managed referrals, and brief/time effective treatment – can be used in a variety of settings to best support youth at risk of suicide. Key roles for peer and community support workers will be emphasized.

Learning Objectives

#1 Specify and apply key principles of SBIRT.

#2 Summarize and apply key elements of intensive case management and referral in the implementation of SBIRT.

#3 Specify benefits to and challenges in supporting youth peers, peer advocates, and support workers maintaining and sustaining key roles in the SBIRT interdisciplinary team.
