Session Description

Review the definitions, history, and etiquette regarding transgender and intersex people. Then take a deeper dive into the data on transgender students, from national and New Mexico surveys. The presenter, Adrien Lawyer of the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, will work with the audience to discuss issues specific to transgender students in school settings, as well as strategies that improve outcomes for these young people.

Learning Objectives

     #1 Define transgender and cisgender.
     #2 Articulate three disparities that transgender students face, both at a state and national level.
     #3 Discuss two strategies that improve outcomes for transgender students.

About the Presenter

Adrien Lawyer is the co-director of the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. TGRCNM is the only organization that provides a wide array of services for the transgender community in our state. Adrien has presented Transgender 101 more than 1200 times all over New Mexico and has been instrumental in advocacy at the individual and policy levels. He is a transgender man and a father and works for equality and accessible resources for all.
