Beyond the ABCs: The Benefits of GSA Clubs




Session Description

Do you want to support LGBTQ+ and allied youth at your school or organization? Do you wonder about the benefits a Genders & Sexualities Alliance (GSA) Club can provide? Join us to learn some basics of what a GSA club is and does, and hear from young people about their experiences in GSA clubs. Then, take home resources & tools for use in your local GSA club.

Learning Objectives

     #1 Describe three key facts about GSA clubs & the benefits to individual youth and school communities when they are present in schools.
    #2 Describe GSA Club member’s experiences.
    #3 Identify activities that can be used to engage youth in GSA clubs.

About the Presenter

Karen Dugas, Program Manager, The Mountain Center
Karen Dugas is proud to serve as the current NMGSAN and Adventure OUT! Program Manager. She is originally from the greater Detroit/Ann Arbor, Michigan area and moved to New Mexico in 2013. Karen earned degrees in international studies and public health and continues to learn from the world around her every day. She has worked with a variety of public health, human service, governmental and higher learning organizations, including refugee resettlement, college recruitment with youth of color, and health promotion with migrant farmworkers, urban communities of color, and elders. She is also the mother of two teens and a devoted daughter, sister, and community member. Karen has been a longtime admirer of the Mountain Center and is honored to support our community to feel safe, cherished, and able to build upon their inherent strengths and resiliency.
