Tom A. Chávez, PhD, is an assistant professor in counselor education at the University of New Mexico and has taught courses in school counseling, child and adolescent counseling, and multiculturalism in the helping professions. He has served the Albuquerque and surrounding communities for more than 15 years, focusing on work with youth and their families of culturally diverse backgrounds. Specific services have included providing therapeutic recreation programming in after-school programs, school counseling, community clinic behavioral health consultation, adolescent depression intervention research, adolescent substance use and risky sexual behavior intervention research, intensive therapy in children psychiatric centers, and intensive therapy in high-security juvenile justice settings. He has been trained in interpersonal process and motivational interviewing models. He also partakes in American Psychological Association, National Latino Psychological Association, and American Counseling Association membership and conferences. Currently, Dr. Chávez is particularly interested in bridging traditional/indigenous practices, such as Curanderismo, and mainstream counseling.
